Skills Training

Practical Tools for Real-Life Challenges

We believe that every child and teen deserves access to tools that help them thrive—not just in school, but in everyday life. Our skills training sessions are designed to build real, functional strategies for navigating emotions, relationships, responsibilities, and change. Whether your child struggles with anxiety, attention, organization, or social interactions, we focus on teaching skills that are relatable, relevant, and immediately useful.

From emotional regulation to self-advocacy, each session is tailored to meet your child where they are—and support them as they grow.

Short Sessions, Big Impact

Our 25-minute skills training sessions are intentionally designed to match the developmental needs of children, teens, and young adults. Many neurodivergent learners—especially those with ADHD, anxiety, or executive functioning challenges—benefit most from short, focused work.

These sessions allow us to target specific skills without overwhelming your child, keeping them engaged and making the most of their energy and attention. Think of them like guided practice or coaching: focused, consistent, and highly personalized.

For even greater impact, we offer optional session bundles, parent check-ins, and the opportunity to pair sessions with counseling for comprehensive support.

What Skills Training Looks Like at Closer Horizons

Emotional Regulation

We help kids and teens recognize, understand, and manage their emotions—so they can move through frustration, anxiety, and big feelings with more ease. These skills lead to healthier reactions, better moods, and a greater sense of control.

Executive Functioning

From organizing backpacks to managing homework, we build tools that help kids stay on track. Strengthening time management, planning, and focus leads to less overwhelm and more independence—at home, at school, and beyond.

Social Skills

We guide kids in developing the confidence to build friendships, read social cues, and communicate clearly. These sessions are especially helpful for those who feel anxious in social situations or want more ease in connecting with others.

Coping Strategies

We teach practical tools like deep breathing, problem-solving, and calming techniques—so kids and teens feel equipped to handle stress, bounce back from setbacks, and approach challenges with confidence.

Flexibility and Adaptability

Whether it’s a last-minute schedule change or a shift in routine, flexible thinking helps kids adjust without spiraling. We build skills that support creative problem-solving and smoother transitions.

Self-Advocacy and Communication

We empower kids to speak up for themselves, ask for help when they need it, and set clear personal boundaries. These tools help them feel confident navigating school, friendships, and everyday life.
